Q and A for those literary viewers

Hello,

So, I have one question: What do you look for in a poet?

The question came to my mind as I sat here with my self-made Vanilla Latte Machiato (don't judge me); as I went through some of the groups I follow and I read a few poems submitted by hopeful poets such as myself, I thought to myself I'm reading your poem and I appreciate the hard work and effort that has gone into it, but there's something I don't like about it...

This happens to all of us, because we all have our preferences, obviously. It doesn't diminish the poets poem but it definitely doesn't bring in those views either. So I thought to myself, what is it that I look in a poem? A few that came to mind was:
1) A specific theme / story-like. If a poem just comprises of a poets rant about something and calls it free verse, unless it is witty, then you have lost  me.
2) rhyme & rhythm. I love poems that are carefully put together; well thought of, and my favourites tend to rhyme. Rhythm doesn't always matter to me, but it is a lot more appealing if you have thought of every possible way to tidy up those lines a bit more!
3) If it triggers a certain emotion to me / allows me to connect with it I love funny poems, romance or something that can give me a good cry, because then i know you did good; you'll be getting a fave from me.

Obviously, these are just my preferences; there are others who care more for carefully constructed lines that comprise of wit and intellect with a knowledge of traditional poetry that follows a specific form or metre. I WISH I was that knowledgeable, and I am fully aware that a lot of my poetry is let down by the lack of proper grammar and form. I know about them and I know how many syllables etc is needed to create one BUT for some reason I have difficulty in it.
I was never a problem child at school but there were definitely children there that ruined my education for me. Also, what I learned at school was completely different to others (even from the same school just different class!); for example, my English teacher would hand out a sheet of paper that had the terms or described how to use a semi-colon properly. But she never explained how to use it or helped those that couldn't grasp it.
I guess I can teach myself, and I just need to find the time now, but I learn through practice not by description, so reading an online article about it just won't cut it... hopefully I will get there.

Back to the question: What is it that you look for?
Please find the time to enlighten me, one of my aims here (besides sharing my poetry) is understanding the people, you, who take the time to read my work. Before you start reading anything, what is it that you look for? A specific theme? Style? When you do read poetry, what puts you off? What is it you don't like in a poem?

Let me know, hopefully I can suit my poetry to your preferences
